Google finally updated its Penguin algorithm after nearly two years of wait. Its last update rolled out in October, 2014. This update is supposed to bring in some revolutionary changes since no Penguin update has been so delayed. This is the fourth major release nomenclating the new update as Penguin 4.0. Google also stated that this is the last release of the sort since Penguin is a real-time signal processed within its core search algorithm.
- Penguin Goes Real Time
Penguin is basically a feature fabricated to filter websites that are spamming Google’s search results. It is an advanced algorithm as compared Google’s regular spamming detection systems. Penguin was released in 2012 and since it has been regularly updated.
The Penguin filter will detect sites that have spamming contents. The sites deemed spammy by Penguin will be penalized and would remain to be penalized until the next time the filter is used, which could take several months. The sites that will be filtered by Penguin 4.0 cannot avert penalization even if they bring in positive changes before the next check.
Since Penguin’s latest update took 2 years to come the sites penalized in 2014 had to be bear the burden for a long period. This, on the other hand, will no longer be the case since Penguin is now real-time. As Google will re-index pages — which is a constant dwelling — those pages will be assessed by the Penguin filter.
- Penguin Becomes More Granular and Signal Specific
According to Google the new Penguin algorithm is more ‘granular’.
This implies that Penguin now devalues spam by bringing down the ranking of spam signals rather than that of the whole site.
This means that the new algorithm works in such a manner that it devalues the direct source of the spam rather than the entire website. It does not particularly mean it only affects pages. It might affect a certain section of a page.
- No More Update Confirmations
Google announced that it will no longer roll out update confirmations of Penguin. Since the Penguin is now real time the update confirmation does not makes sense anymore.
